Can you use oils after a Brazilian straightening treatment?

First of all, one of the most well-known and sought-after benefits of Brazilian straightening is to deeply nourish the hair fiber , thanks to the keratin provided in large quantities. A piece of advice that hairdressing professionals give is not to put oil on your hair before doing a Brazilian straightening. Indeed, this fatty substance will then act as a barrier against the keratin, which will therefore not be able to penetrate the hair deeply as desired.

Even if you or the hairdresser washes your hair with a clarifying shampoo, not all the oil will be removed. Therefore, the Brazilian straightening will not be at its maximum effect, which is far from desired.

Then, applying oil to your hair after a Brazilian straightening treatment would have no beneficial effect, whether in simple application or in an oil bath. However, when this straightening fades over time, putting oil helps nourish the hair so that it remains sheathed and healthy . Indeed, oils bring shine, protection and hydration to the hair. In addition, oil baths are recommended for all hair types, but especially curly, afro or naturally frizzy hair.

Types of oils

There are several types of oils that can be used to make oil baths and daily applications. We can mention the following with the benefits they bring to the hair:

  • Jojoba oil : It helps regulate scalp sebum for people with oily hair. It can also be used to provide shine, suppleness and protection against ultraviolet rays.
  • Argan oil : known to be a natural anti-aging agent, it also provides all the necessary elements to the hair. It moisturizes the hair and strengthens it.
  • Castor oil : this is one of the most effective oils for hair. Indeed, it helps accelerate hair growth while giving strength and volume.
  • Coconut oil : it penetrates the hair fiber by providing all the necessary vitamins. It allows you to obtain soft hair. Be careful, it is only applied to the lengths and not directly to the scalp.
  • Avocado oil : This oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamin E. It also helps stimulate regrowth, like castor oil, while protecting the hair from external aggressions.
  • Sweet almond oil : it softens hair, especially those with split ends, frizz or afro. It repairs damaged lengths and protects them from the outside.
  • Macadamia Oil : Macadamia oil nourishes and moisturizes hair, helping it stay healthy.
  • Amla oil : it facilitates hair growth on the one hand, and on the other hand helps slow down hair loss. It is also known to prevent the appearance of white hair.
  • Borage oil : It has many benefits, but one of its main effects is to nourish dry hair and reduce hair loss.

Application of oils after a Brazilian straightening

Before applying one of these oils, another hair oil is strongly recommended by hair professionals. This is keratin oil , which is applied to dry or wet hair. It can be applied as an oil bath before washing, or just after drying with a hair dryer.

Be careful, you should never apply oil to wet hair just before drying it! You can only apply oil to wet hair if you want to let it air dry naturally. So let's go back to keratin oil, it smooths frizz and gives extra shine, which the Brazilian straightening would have already provided before. The keratin provided by this oil to the hair helps, among other things, to prolong the effect of its Brazilian straightening . Since the keratin is then constantly supplied, it disappears less quickly.

Note the existence of oils particularly adapted to hair that has received a Brazilian straightening treatment. These are oils combining several oils and nutrients essential to the hair fiber. For example, most of these oils contain keratin combined with argan oil or jojoba oil. These oils therefore contain keratin and many other beneficial elements, the smoothing effect obtained with a Brazilian straightening treatment lasts for some additional time. This is not negligible.

Can you use oils after a Brazilian straightening treatment: conclusion

In short, a large number of oils exist on the market to maintain your hair . However, you must be careful not to overload your hair, at the risk of suffocating and saturating the scalp. The risk incurred when you overload the hair and especially the scalp, is to obtain greasy and sticky hair. In addition, Brazilian straightening provides keratin, an essential nutrient for the hair, the application of oils or oil baths is useless. Indeed, keratin having strengthened the hair to the maximum, external products such as oil or masks that are too greasy will have no effect; and will simply slide on the hair without providing anything. The best is always to be careful with the products you use. We remind you that you must at all costs avoid shampoos and treatments containing SLS (Sodium Lauryl or Laureth Sulfate), which is a powerful detergent. This removes keratin very easily and the Brazilian straightening then fades quickly. It is also necessary to apply keratin-enriched treatments such as masks or keratin oil, mentioned above.
