What is Brazilian straightening?

First of all, this styling technique is well known for its moisturizing properties on the hair fiber. Indeed, when we apply this method, a large amount of keratin is applied to the hair. This keratin is actually a vital protein for the hair, because it protects it against external aggressions.

Heat, ultraviolet rays from the sun, pollution and even humidity from the rain will no longer be problems. In addition, Brazilian straightening allows your hair to remain smooth even in high humidity. No more frizz or unwanted waves, your hairstyle will stay in place in all circumstances!

Hair type

Then, Brazilian straightening can be applied to any type of hair: curly, frizzy, etc. This technique allows you to style your hair more easily and above all more quickly thanks to the sheathing provided by keratin . If you have frizz, this straightening is also for you, because it will allow you to tame it without any problem.

However, for very curly hair, Brazilian straightening will not make it completely straight, but will define larger curls. If you want to do a straightening, you will have to use more aggressive products containing, among other things, a large amount of formaldehyde. If the Brazilian straightening kit you were planning to use contains formaldehyde and/or formaldehyde in large proportions, run away!

Other dangerous products

These products are very harmful to the health of your hair from 0.2% . Other controversial ingredients should also be avoided. This is the case for butylparaben, propylparaben or phenoxyethanol. These last three elements have been shown to be carcinogenic and allergenic.

The products used generally contain the following beneficial elements:

  • Keratin : This is the key element that gives elasticity and strength to your hair. It is also the protein that allows the hair to be shaped in depth.
  • Jojoba oil : it helps reduce hair loss, brings shine and also life to the hair. It is also a very good oil to apply for maintenance, as a mask for example.
  • Hyaluronic acid : it will shape and hydrate the hair fiber, allowing it to resist changes in temperature and humidity more strongly.

That being said, the other elements vary between brands. Some add murumuru butter or plant-based collagen.

Application of Brazilian straightening

Regarding the application of a Brazilian straightening, it is done in several steps, whether in a salon or at home. Here are the different steps to follow scrupulously:

  1. Do a single strand test to make sure your hair is healthy.
  2. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo. This helps to deeply cleanse, remove substances from the hair and open the cuticles.
  3. Dry your hair until it is moderately damp.
  4. Apply the smoothing product evenly to thin strands using a brush and comb for ease. The product should be applied over the entire length of the hair, evenly and without overdoing it.
  5. Leave the product on for 30 to 60 minutes. The application time varies depending on the nature of the hair and the product used. You should check the time on the bottle.
  6. Rinse your hair without completely removing the smoothing product.
  7. Dry your hair with a brush and straighten the strands up to 10 times, while being careful with the temperature used. The point is not to burn your hair.

Brazilian straightening and duration

Be careful, the protection period of the smoothing is important. You should know that it is forbidden to touch your hair for at least three days. You should not wash it, do not tie it up, do not wear a hat. In fact, you should not modify it, it will keep its shape more easily.

For coloring or highlights, it's the same thing, but the duration extends to two weeks. Then, if you want to keep your straightening longer and more effectively, you should not use shampoos containing sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).

You can also use pH neutral shampoos, as they will not attack the keratin or your hair. Some hairdressers recommend using keratin-based treatments to nourish your hair and your straightening. Using a hair straightener, at least once a week, is recommended to reactivate the keratin and prolong the effect of your Brazilian straightening. In addition, when the effect of the Brazilian straightening fades, you will gradually regain your natural hair. You will not have to go through the stage of untamable frizz or straight curls.

The price of Brazilian straightening

Finally, let's talk about the price of a Brazilian straightening treatment . Its price naturally varies depending on the salon or the products used. However, a range between 150 and 400 euros can be established. Another way to do it would be to use a do-it-yourself kit at home. These kits contain the straightening product, the clarifying shampoo, and sometimes even accessories. They are of course more reasonable in terms of price, given that they do not contain the labor and professionalism of a hairdresser.

What is Brazilian straightening: conclusion

In conclusion, Brazilian straightening will remain at the top of hair styling methods for a long time to come. Salons or home kits can attest to this. Note that you really have to be careful about the products you use, at the risk of damaging your hair irreversibly. If you choose to buy a kit online, read the composition of the product carefully while paying attention to the elements we listed above.
