Brazilian straightening and coloring: when to do what?

First of all, hair professionals will recommend that you do your coloring before your Brazilian straightening . The products used to do your coloring will open the scales of your hair to let the color in. As a result, the keratin in the Brazilian straightening will also penetrate the hair better.

Please note that keratin is the essential element for the health of your hair, providing nutrition and shine. If you do your coloring before, you will also allow the Brazilian straightening to repair your hair. Indeed, the keratin will fill the damaged scales of your hair, and make them more beautiful and shiny, in addition to being smooth. The products used to perform a Brazilian straightening do not only contain keratin, they contain other ingredients that are extremely good for your hair fiber, such as jojoba oil or vegetable collagen.

Harmful products

Be careful, they can also contain harmful products. Some Brazilian straightening kits contain butylparaben or propylparaben , for example. These substances are dangerous for your hair, but not only that, it is especially you who risks a lot by using these products. They are known to be carcinogenic and allergenic. So be very careful about the products you use and read the list of ingredients on the bottle.

How long before coloring?

Brazilian blowouts and hair coloring go well together. You should know that you can color your hair yourself or at a salon after having Brazilian blowouts, but you will have to wait at least 2 weeks . (Check out this guide on the waiting time between Brazilian blowouts and hair coloring ).

If we want to go into detail, this delay allows the keratin to still penetrate the hair during this period of time. This is also why you should not wash or tie your hair during the first days of straightening. It is therefore better to do your coloring or highlights before doing your Brazilian straightening.

Unfortunately, if this is not possible, you should know that the products used for coloring will strip your hair by eliminating all the unwanted substances... but also the desirable elements like keratin! Your straightening will therefore be reduced in terms of its effectiveness and duration. To limit the damage, it is preferable to apply an ammonia-free color to your hair.

This substance will open the scales too much and therefore eliminate the keratin, so it is better to avoid it. Hairdressers will therefore prefer to give you a tone-on-tone or semi-permanent coloring, which does not contain ammonia.

Another alternative is plant-based coloring , which does not open the scales of the hair fiber and therefore keeps the keratin in place. Otherwise, some hairdressers will suggest you do a Brazilian straightening treatment after coloring, in order to restore keratin to your hair.

The clarification

Finally, Brazilian straightening can sometimes have a lightening effect on your hair. We then advise you to do your coloring just before as you will have understood, but also to make it a little darker. By doing this, the final color will be the one desired at the start. We can also advise you on Brazilian straightening kits to do at home.

Some of these kits are specially designed for colored hair, as they do not contain anything chemical, just natural oils and ingredients. In addition, if you have done a homemade coloring, you can redo your Brazilian straightening at home, at your own pace.

Brazilian straightening and coloring: maintenance

Finally, we will give you some advice on how to maintain your Brazilian straightening treatment and even your coloring:

  1. Use keratin-based treatments : this will always nourish and restore strength to your hair in depth. Apply at least one mask to your hair per week or a keratin-based serum.
  2. Do not use products containing sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) : the latter is a very harmful element for your hair fiber, it will eliminate all the keratin and therefore, your Brazilian straightening.
  3. Use sun care on your hair when exposed to the sun : this treatment has the same action as sun cream and protects the hair fiber from ultraviolet rays.
  4. Avoid exposing your hair to chlorine or sea salt : these exposures dry out the hair and eliminate keratin, they will also attack your coloring.
  5. Don't apply too much heat to your hair : Whether it's the straightener or the hair dryer, try not to use extreme temperatures for your color and straightening. You can also let them air dry to avoid any heat aggression.
  6. Don't wash your hair too often : Shampoos will strip the keratin present in the hair. In addition, they will also fade and lighten your color more quickly. Try to space out your washes by using dry shampoo, for example.
  7. Do not use products containing sulfate : as it contains a lot of salt, it will dry out your hair, remove keratin and also bleach your hair.
  8. Avoid hairspray or curling mousse : they will accelerate the depigmentation of your color and also dry out your hair.
  9. Shampoo your hair at the roots : this helps avoid stripping the keratin and your color. You will therefore preserve your coloring and your Brazilian straightening.
  10. Rinse your hair with cold water : this low temperature will close your hair scales, and therefore preserve the pigments in your coloring.

And there you have it! Now you know everything that is important to combine Brazilian straightening and coloring. All you have to do is apply all these rules and tips, and you will have healthy hair.
